Summer Reading Assignment                                                K.K. Eberhard

AP  English Literature and Composition

Assigned                                           Monday, June 07, 2010

You should soon begin reading your four novels for next year’s AP English Literature. Four students will be reading LOF due to already having read AHF. DO NOT wait until the last week of holiday and expect to pass first quarter. Not doing your summer work will create a difficult first semester for you. There are approximately twelve hundred  pages to be read before September. The key is to set a steady pace and enjoy the experience.

While reading, you will be required to mark each novel with self-stick removable notes (SSRN) regarding the focus for each particular text. The expectation is that you will find something of interest from a focus area every other page.  DO NOT WRITE ON THE TEXTS.

Have the following books read and marked appropriately when we return in September for points.  Expect literary discussion circles and essay assignments over EVERY TEXT as we begin the new school year.

CLICK INDIVIDUAL ICONS FOR HELP WITH ANALYSIS OF PARTICULAR TEXTS

THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN          Mark Twain

LORD OF THE FLIES                                      William Golding

THE SCARLET LETTER                                                    Nathaniel Hawthorne

  GRAPES OF WRATH                                              John Steinbeck

  THE AWAKENING                                              Kate Chopin

LITERARY NOTES:  While reading, use self-stick removable notes to mark observations of the work’s textual details, considering: structure, style, theme, social and historical values, figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone. Consider satire in AHF.. Online resources are a great foundation builder. Before beginning any new text, I suggest gathering as much background information as possible to make your reading experience as enlightening as possible.  CHECK THE LINKS ABOVE TO HELP GET THROUGH EACH NOVEL.

PERSONAL REFLECTION NOTES:  Personal thoughts and questions are also a part of every reading. They are welcome, but should NOT take precedent over literary observations.
